Is this just me? Am I weird? Or do a lot of other people find it hard to drive properly while listening to music?
I find that I just can't drive properly while listening to music. Is this just me?

I've been driving for a few weeks, but whenever I listen to music, even when it's not that loud, I find that it totally puts me off, for example I'll end up going over the speed limit without realising, and then realising about 5 seconds later, and when slowing down for a corner I'll realise that I need to make the turn too late and I'll only just make it around the corner.

I suppose everyone is different. If I find myself getting into a busy situation, such a waiting to pull out of traffic or negotiating a roundabout, i'll always seem to turn my music down. However I have a tendancy to be able to focus on the road and ignore whats going on inside the car at an instant, whether it be music or my girlfriend going blah blah blah. Usually will just reply saying 'yeah, yeah, i know, yeah....yeah' :D
Just do with whatever you are comfortable with! I know many people who drive with no music whatsoever, or dont really want to talk! -
what sort of music are we talking about, take that or Daniel O'Donnell lol,
the thing is, you need to concentrate, if you get fined for this, that and the other, due to listening to loud music or having accidents in the first 2 years, you will have to re-take your test again, so calm down, and slow down :D -
Yea! I have a CD that I made up on my computer, that I put in when my patience is just about gone...its full of nice slow tracks and tunes that calm me down. My favourite ones are the theme tune to Band of Brothers, the theme to the film The Mission and other such tracks. Its amazing just how that can soothe the frustration we sometimes get while driving in these modern times;)

100 - 102FM is a classical music station. I receive it on 100.6 or 100.9 locally. I do believe that slower tempoed music has a calming effect, and the most common station I listen to is Magic FM, as most of what they broadcast is slow tempoed easy listening. Although depending on where I am going and why dictates what I am going to listen to.

i do apoloigise i thought he was talking about our local radio station KMFM which is pure rubbish and he seams to 'big up' for absoloutley no reason.
and secondly lew_1275 is one of my very best friends as we have been for many many years.

lol i was the oppisate! when i was lerning i was ok but very slow because of nerves (i watch too much traffic cops ect) so my driving instructor put the radio on dead quiet so you could just make out the song and i was so much better! then after a few weeks we gradually turned the radio off and got this annoying habbit of singing to myself! my examiner thought it was funny but said everyone is different with things like that!
btw i dont do that any more i just have the cd player on lol -
No you are not abnormal; you are demonstrating that your brain is fully occupied. Music uses more of the brains powers than say speech; we are more able to blank out speech at times of maximum brain load. If you were listening to the music it takes a long time to disengage. Calming music might well be a good idea in a snarl-up though.
