Variable speed limits on motorways

Do the cameras still operate and enforce the national speed limit when a variable limit is not in force on systems such as those on M25 and M42?

Variable speed cameras
When a speed limit is shown as being below the national speed limit, the cameras operate at an appropriate setting, so if what you mean is "Can I ignore the posted limit, because the camera is still looking for vehicles breaking the national limit?" the simple answer is "No". -
hi watcher
no i meant the exact opposite
when the limit is showing as national speed limit rather than a reduced speed are the cameras set to snap anyone doing over 70 -
Everyone ignores them anyway, and on most occasions if I slowed to the limit posted, which I would like to, I'd run the risk of being someones bumper ornament
The fact that the limits are sometimes their for inaccurate reasons ("queue ahead" at 3 am, with no roadworks, abnormal load or even traffic in sight) does reinforce drivers to believe they are almost always inaccurate and don't need to be obeyed. But thats for another thread. -
Whether there are cameras, and what speed they are set for is immaterial. The fact is that the 'concertina' effect of everyone trying to arrive at the same time causes unnecessary delays. If the speed limit was adhered to, and a sensible distance kept between vehicles, there would be no need for a variable speed limit.
