Why not set up a New Members Area at the top of the forum. This would provide a dedicated section for new members to introduce themselves. It would also give those new forum members who are inexperienced a chance of dipping their toes in the water with a simple post, also giving them their first post count. :)
Possibly also a dedicated SOS Box sub section area where members can post questions if they are having problems or frustration using the forum tools :)
