RAC do not transport cars for members following a purchase as they do not have an operators license commonly known as an O license. An O license is required to transport 'goods'. Broken down cars are not classed as 'goods' therefore unless your car is broken down, RAC would be breaking the law by transporting it.
RAC do however work with 100s of contractors across the country, many of whom do have an O license and would be able to offer a private recovery. If you call the breakdown number, RAC should be able to put you in touch with the local contractor who can offer a proffesional service. -
RAC Can arrange to have your vehicle tranported using a contractor, i beleive the rates are £150 for the first 25 miles and then £50 for every 25 miles after that.

if you were to start your journey and break down wouldn't you be able to be taken the rest of the way if the rac couldn't fix it at the roadside?

I just had my new ( to me ! ) XK delivered by
http://www.paulridley.co.uk
who is a specialist vehicle transporter. I am very pleased, Paul even put a picture of my car in his gallery!
I contacted recovery companies, but they were expensive and some couldn't do it due to the licence thing already mentioned as car delivery is a different animal apparently! Things you learn!
I was not keen on it turning up on a breakdown lorry in any case - what would the neighbours think!
Roll on bank holiday....
