My late granny got stuck in Thailand during the military coup in 2006 when the airport was taken... we are remembering her employer (upper class, a bit out of touch) getting frustrated because she didn't just drive home

I tried to map it on Google and Apple maps but it doesn't want to play

Is it even possible? (I read about China being quite strict on foreign drivers) How long do you think it'd take? Which route would you take???

Remember Russia and Ukraine would have been fair game back then, if that's relevant

@Drivingforfun apparently Myanmar is the main issue, because you need special permits to travel there. You would need a bunch of visas...


If we ignore that tiny detail, you can drive from India to Turkey... couple of ferries and you are back home in no time. 😂

Your poor granny, hope she ignored her boss and didn't get too stressed about something she couldn't control

She was staying over there with an acquaintance so luckily didn't have to pay for a hotel; unfortunately this acquaintance was a British expat and anxiously tried to discourage Granny from going to the British embassy (to cut a long story short)... she knew some "characters" through work 😂

@Drivingforfun now I am officially intrigued 😂 why would he discourage her from contacting the Embassy? Were the characters shady? So many questions, so little answers!

Glad she didn't have to pay for a hotel, how long did she have to stay there for?

Did the exile have a map showing where he stashed the diamonds, what did the butler know, why was the maid sacked from the embassy, and what did the local chip shop owner mean when he said, "he (the exile) knew more than he was letting on"?

To be honest I don't know why he'd need to discourage my granny from going to the embassy - he wasn't related to her or anything!

I think the story is my granny used to work in a business where the owners were some quite upper class types but who wanted to have their hand in less respectable type stuff, but in a kind of "hands off" way. This guy was a kind of gofer between the posh chaps and the gangsters/thugs

I don't watch TV but I think there was a film or TV series about that recently, so I guess it was something that went on a bit??
