EV Road Tax Confusion - please help!

  • CarConfused's Avatar
I'm looking at 2025-26 ID4s, all of which have a list price of around £45k (well below £50k) and so should not be subject to the expensive car supplement? However, the apps I've used when entering car registrations show them all as
"This vehicle has an additional tax surchage of £425 until xx xx 2031".

Any ideas on this would be much appreciated?

I don't think this is correct but I don't want to buy the car then go to tax it only to find it is correct. I was going to go for a 2025 but am now thinking easy to just go for a 2024 instead.

"The Expensive Car Supplement used to apply to all cars with a list price (the on-the-road car price) over £40,000. This threshold was increased to £50,000 in November 2025 - but only for electric cars. This allows more EVs to be exempt from the extra charge.
These changes are backdated to April 2025, meaning EV drivers who bought an electric car with a list price between £40,000 and £50,000 after that point will no longer have to pay the supplement."

    I looked it up.
The threshold is 40 grand not 50 and as of April 2025 the EV exemption was removed.

Definitely subject to LVED but my suggestion would be to look elsewhere anyway as VW IDs have rather a lot of known issues which can become very expensive very quickly. I’ll not recommend a particular brand, model or type because all are a personal choice but would recommend taking a look at the ‘Which’ reports on EVs under the 40k range. You will or could be pleasantly surprised by their results.
