My wife, who took over the garden from me, has just dragged me out to show me our new swamp, courtesy of all the rain we've had recently. We had a few plants showing signs of new growth. which are now a sticky brown mess. The whole area is covered in an oily grey scum. I can only hope it sorts itself out for the summer!

That's cruel.
The only reason I'm not digging my garden at the moment is that I don't have a permit to buy explosives, which is what it would take to break up the hard pack after not seeing any rain for months. 😏
