The government have recently issued a traffic-light ranking system, covering all 154 local highways authorities in England, with regards to how well they are dealing with potholes long-term road maintenance.

It would have been far better if the money involved setting up the traffic light scheme had been spent on repairs!

One of the problems about pothole repairs seems to be lack of reporting. I often have my friends telling me of new ones they have come across, and when I ask if they have reported them, I usually get something along the lines of: "What is the point - nobody does anything about them", as a reply.

I wonder how many potholes get reported by friends/relatives of people who fall victim to the pothole, a day or so before the victim puts in a claim?

I wonder if there is any data on how many claims are successful?

It could be argued, on a well potholed piece of road, anyone whose vehicle sustained damage was driving too fast for the conditions?

@olduser Not sure I agree with that. It is the responsibility of local boroughs to maintain roads, and I think it reasonable to assume they have done their job, which is why people are awarded damage costs. It can be difficult to spot some potholes for a number of reasons, eg wet roads, leaves covering or shadows on the road. I

If it's the responsibility, or better still duty to fix the roads go to a council meeting and tell them you intend to file a Writ of Mandamus to compel them to perform their duty.

Get the local press involved because the last thing a council will want is the courts commanding them to do their job.
Not so far fetched because I did just that when our local county commissioners refused to stop a trucking company from operating out of a private address and it worked. 😎
