Road works

    As the song says things can only get worse!
    Found on the BBC news website;

    As far I can work out, no one is in charge.

    We have an HS2 dig locally. They often send us notification of predicted road closures. Then completely ignore them. They do take time out to set up the completely nonsensical diversion routes though. Then close the relevant road without notice and wonder why nobody wants it.

    My local High Street has a mini roundabout at the North end, a crossroads around half-way along, and a light controlled crossroad at the bottom. There were three lots of roadworks running in the area, all with the High Street along the suggested routes. Very cleverly, this meant Diverted Traffic signs were set up for all of the directions at both crossroads and at the roundabout. Apparently, when challenged the Borough said they were not responsible - for their own roadworks!

    I was driving out of Norwich today and roadworks diverted us to the middle of the road and then back left into a bus lane. I'm half wondering if I will end up with a ticket for being in the bus lane as wouldn't put it past them to not have "told" the computer system about the roadworks

    This might be true - I read somewhere that, planning, signage, diversions, and so on is out outsourced. Frequently digging the hole is outsourced, the work to be done is outsourced, and the backfilling and making good is (wait for it) outsourced.

    I think our Borough got rid of their workers over 10yrs ago. Since then we have had what were perfectly good roads turned into roller coasters when they are resurfaced. Then they split, but instead of making the original company make good, they pay another company to pour tar into the cracks. Then when the potholes appear, yet another company turn up. Each time the road is closed, which is a rush hour rat run, of course each company put their own idea of a diversion into play. One of which is around 7 miles- in the suburbs. Where other companies diversions are around 1 mile. They could be a few hundred yds if early warning was given.

    @Drivingforfun A while ago there was a diversion on the North Circular Road because of a collision. The Police set up the diversion - into the Congestion Zone. Thousands of FPNs were issued. Only a few contested the FPNs although, as per usual, the Media never bothered publicizing what happened with regard to them

    It would seem that one of our local busiest roads is to dug up for gas mains work. There are 2 matrix boxes proclaiming work starts 26 Jan for 6wks. On the other hand there are 2 of those folding yellow signs stating work starts 19 Jan. Personally. I like this kind of comedy as it stops my sense of humour from corroding away.

    Water and electricity ae waiting in the wings to put their signs up for their repairs under the road to put right the damage done by the Gas! They will come out once Gas has fixed the road.

    So, yet another road closure. HS2 works are closing 'their' road again as of 14 Feb, and they have sent out maps of the planned diversion. Using the road which will be closed due to gas main work, whose diversion would include HS2's road. Couldn't make it up.
