How do you calculate repaint cost after car body damage?

I need some advice from people who have experience with car body repair and repainting. Recently my car got small accident and few panels need repaint. I visit two workshops and both give very different prices, so now I am confused how they calculate the cost. I understand paint type, surface preparation, and labor hours all affect price, but still I feel there should be some standard way to estimate this work. I searched online about accurate painting estimating, because without proper estimating it is hard to know if garage price is fair or not. I found this guide on accurate painting estimating which explains paint quantity, labor time, and cost breakdown, and honestly it helped me understand why prices change so much.
Without this type of estimating, it feels like customers have no reference point and just trust whatever workshop says. I think many drivers face same issue after scratches or accident repairs. How do you usually judge if repainting quote is reasonable? Do you rely on experience, insurance assessor, or some estimating method? Any advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, labour rates vary incredibly across the country. It is sometimes worth travelling to a different area to take advantage of cheaper rates. All I can really recommend is to ring round for quotes.
