I have got to the bottom of the supercharger - the early H16 engines were built for the 1.5litre supercharged class (pre1966).
For 1966 F1 had a 3 litre naturally aspirated class, BRM decided to use the same layout as the 1.5 but now 3 litre and 4 valves per cylinder.
This engine produced max power at around 10,000 RPM but was heavy compared to V8's, and the engine's CG was high and made worse because it had to be installed higher to allow for the lower bank's exhausts resulting in the cars CG being high and further back than ideal.
In that era the fuel tanks were on the sides of the car alongside the driver!
