Pay per mile
-
Good afternoon, in this afternoons budget it was announced that along with EV cars plugin hybrids would be taxed. No mention of full hybrids (hev) have I dodged a bullet owning a hev or have I missed something?

With petrol engined cars being phased out, they are losing revenue from petrol taxes so they would have to make up for the shortfall somehow.
Pay per mile would be the fairest system; the more you drive, the more you pay, but the problem would be implementation.
You've seen the lengths people will go to to make their cars anonymous to avoid various congestion and anti pollution charges, an alternative to road tax would be even worse.
So the only practical way to implement the pay per mile charge would be to have all cars internet connected, leading to all sorts of privacy issues, and still the problem that the system can be circumnavigated.

@Walt
i get that but not sure if you understood my question
racheal reeves mentioned electric cars and in her words plugin hybrids, what about HEV,s -
Hi @Walt, happy Thursday and thanks for your question!
For the looks of it, owning an HEV likely means youβre not subject to the new per-mile EV tax. It seems the new charge only covers EVs and PHEVs, so it's a great day to own one. π
I've just published a thread related to this topic here. Do you think HEVs will be taxed next?Lily

@Lily that is my interpretation of it as ms reeves specifically said plugin hybrids not full hybrids.it makes sense as I cannot travel just on battery for more than a couple of miles. I will feel better when I see it in writing. If you get any definitive literature on this please would you let me know. Walt
