Focus 1.6i Ti-VCT Exhaust Camshaft Slow Fault

    Hi There,

    I have been having an EML coming on reduced jerky performance over the past little while, I have serviced the car (flush also added prior to drain), replaced both oil control valves, camshaft sensors and still have the reduced performance from time to time and a fault: P000B-E1 Exhaust B Camshaft Position Response Slow when the EML appears. It does run okay but then has its days when it feels very jolty and slow in the uptake but once at speed she drives fine.


    Its been getting the most of me and I cant get to the bottom of it. Its the 1.6i VVTi engine, hopefully someone could shine some light.

    That code P000B-E1 usually points to cam timing being slow to respond. Since you’ve already swapped sensors and valves, it could be down to a stretched timing chain or low oil pressure. Wiring’s also worth a check.

    Best bet is to get a garage to run a proper diagnostic on the chain and oil system. You’ve done the right groundwork already, this should help nail it down.

    It sounds as though the fault is in the variable valve timing system. This shifts the valve timing for higher revs.

    The camshaft drive pullies have a mechanism inside to allow the timing to change see. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YjIKUrre4FQ this is operated by oil pressure. This oil is controlled by a solenoid valve from the ECU.

    Assuming the solenoid valve is working, I think, garages usually replace the whole pulley rather than try to service the unit.
    If the engine is high mileage I would change them both.

    If you decide to do the swap yourself you will have to take the timing belt off (consider fitting a new one along with idler pully) position the timing marks first.
