Potential fraud linked to the RAC, no proper contact number for the RAC.

I phoned the RAC to book a mobile mechanic, I was referred to their website which in turn transferred me, without informing me, to an independent company called mechanics24/7.co.uk. This I later discovered is an online service that gives you mechanical advice, it has no mobile breakdown service, their website is considered to be "unsettled and unsafe" so beware. They charged me a £5 joining fee and then having got my card details took unauthorised payments from by bank account. I have had to cancel my card. I have tried to take this matter up with the RAC but can't find any proper customer service number, just answering machines referring me to online chatbots. Has anyone had a similar experience or knows of some way of speaking to the RAC about this?

Hi @hampton - welcome to the RAC Community and thanks for posting!

Sounds like a frustrating situation you found yourself in here.

I'm not sure where you started out online but the correct place to book this service online is via this link. Is it possible you misheard or mis-entered the URL to enter?

If you need to contact someone about this, all contact details can be found on the RAC Contact Us page here.

    I hope that helps,
    Nick
    Thanks,
    Nick

This could be one of the infuriating cases where a Google search puts a similar-looking site that turns out to be a rip-off above the one you actually want.

Get onto your card company urgently, tell them what happened and have your card stopped NOW. There may be a phone number on your card to report scams and fraud

They will fix you up with a new card, and your old card 's details will then be unusable, depending on your card's terms and conditions they may even refund you.

Advising the RAC is not urgent, the above is.

    Best wishes.
