Turbo died

    Hello
    I drive a shogun sg3 2013
    4m41 3.2l engine

    Its serviced every year

my car stopped responding and became a diesel runaway i quickly blocked air intake to stall engine

My turbo vt13 (old no information to ever say it was changed) has massive amount of oil in it, the turbine fins have been damaged and nut has come loose from turbine which has made it very loose

My oil catch can took alot of oil in (been on for years emptied every month not much comes out)

Iv checked obd2 and everything is fine no engine light

Iv removed turbo and back end seems fine (no shrapnel or oil)

my question is if I get rac out to check my engine will they be able to help check the rest of my engine before I put new turbo on or can they not do that on my drive 🤔 will inhave to get it to a garage to be properly checked

Iv replaced turbo solenoid and going to clean dpf, check pcv valve and few other things

Any tips, help and ideas what the cause was is helpful

Hi there @Hobotony, thank you for your question.

The possible cause of the damage could be turbo bearing/seal failure due to wear, contamination, or oil starvation.

I think the best you can do is getting in touch with our team of experts here: https://www.rac.co.uk/contact-us. They can tell you if they can check the engine before you make the changes you want to do.

Have a great weekend! And let us know if you find the root of the issue.

I doubt that RAC will come and look at your engine, it is hardly a roadside breakdown or a none starter that is if you have home cover.

As mentioned above it sounds as though oil seals have gone on the turbo but if as you suggest nothing is missing hopefully nothing went into the engine - look for any signs of the air end catching the case.

Have you found a clear reason for the runaway or was the engine running on lube oil from the turbo?

    Good luck.

A turbo has two turbines on a common shaft, one that's spun by exhaust gas the other compresses the intake air.
The fins will only get damaged if they come in contact with a foreign object or the bearings are worn so bad the fins have contacted the casing.
If it's on the exhaust side the only place for the contamination could come from, other than the fins hitting the casing is from the engine itself, such as metal from the cylinder/piston/rings/valves or carbon that has built up and broken loose.
If the intake side has damaged fins, again it's either a foreign object or the fins hitting the casing, but either way the engine has ingested the broken parts of the fins.
Before changing the turbo have a garage do a compression test and a borescope examination of the cylinders, or buy a cheap borescope and have a look yourself.

Not much point putting a new turbo on a damaged engine.
