Sad to learn that Jim Lovell, the commander of Apollo 13 has passed away today aged 97.

I heard this on the News. I remember at the time that NASA never announced until they had landed, and were recovered.

Apollo 13 is the name of the film and a cracker it is as well. Apparently it is one of the most accurate historical films ever..

Jim Lovell not only approved it, but he made a cameo appearance in it as the Captain of the carrier which was involved in the recovery after splashdown.

@olduser Yes, there was! I remember watching it as a kid, and it left such a lasting impression on me (I was terrified for them and convinced they were all going to die) that I decided not to apply to NASA after seeing it! I must have been about seven at the time and I still wanted to be a doctor–vet–pop singer–mechanic-mom. 😂

He lived a great life... a true legend. I imagine he inspired thousands of people to become astronauts or study science.

Thinking about it, Tom Hanks was unstoppable in the 90s.

They played some of the original NASA recordings on the radio. He was so calm, I think that was the scariest part.
