I have sat in the public gallery at Magistrates Courts on many occasions. (Mainly when I worked with teenagers.) I was not at all surprised to see that those who argue, or come off as 'stroppy' tend to attract heavier punishments. I was surprised that those who blatantly cried crocodile tears attracted very lenient punishments on occasions.
