The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency have revealed that the backlog for driving has hit a new high, with the number of tests being conducted falling substantially.

There were around 12% fewer tests taken in March this year compared to March 2024, with the number of passes also declining by around 8%. In the first three numbers the drop is 18.3% compared to the first three months of last year.

Despite these falling numbers, in actual fact the pass rate increased slightly - showing us that although fewer people were tested, a higher proportion of those people actually passed.

I'd love to hear from people that have tested recently, passed (or failed) recently, or are stuck in the backlog, about what your experiences are in amongst all of this.

You can interpret stats in so many ways, but the old “correlation isn’t causation” is always true in my opinion…That’s not to say it’s not a bit of fun to speculate … I wonder if maybe due to the impacts of the backlog people are just getting in more practise while waiting for a test

Your probably right, as they say practice makes perfect.

The examiners have probably had pressure put on to clear the backlog, it must be tempting to pass more to reduce the backlog.
This ones borderline, OK pass then.

Percentages alone are meaningless in this context. How many applicants were there? Somehow that comes across to me as more a politician's comment than a mathematician's.
