I thought it could be an interesting thing to make a topic about, and see what others come up with

I was chatting with my dad who said he was taught to double-de-clutch when he joined the police, and how it's not necessary anymore but he says he still does it without thinking about it

Checking the oil comes to mind, I quite like imagining what my granddad would say if I showed him how to check the oil level of my my current car, which doesn't have a dipstick

I assume in future clutch control or even being aware of gears/engine speed will be totally redundant

I was taught to drive in the Army. Not all gearboxes had synchromesh so we were taught to double clutch on all vehicles. When I joined the regiment, I discovered the joy of range-changers, pre-select and auto de-clutch vehicles, as well as fully automatics.
Pressing a button definitely beats cleaning oil drips that fall off the dipstick.
Anti roll-back for hill starts is pretty useful too. Although it only holds for a second or so. Unlike my old Rover Coupe which held forever.*
*A sprag bearing in the gearbox did this, and one was used on a lot of motorcycle starter motors, don't know if they are still used.

The art of using the choke has gone.

Synchronising clutch, throttle and handbrake for a hill start is dead these days.
Cadence braking isn't needed any more ABS doe's it now, when needed, for each individual wheel!

But we still get oil films on the windscreen and wipers, and the windscreen washers still cannot shift it.

Switching on the lights and wipers is obsolescent.

Thanks, @Beelzebub as I learnt a new word. Reading your post I was going to disagree as they don't seem quite dead yet, then looked up that word and realised that's exactly what you said 👍

@Beelzebub I seriously miss the auto wipers I had on last car, they could cope with any amount of rain, drizzle and lorry spray when overtaking. The intermittent on my current one is adjustable, but the drizzle likes to change rate every few seconds! I've reverted to using the flick wipe.
