Advice for major engine issue

Hi all, just looking for some advice if possible, I had to take my 10 year old Hyundai Santa Fe to our local garage yesterday due to some knocking sound coming from the engine.
i've had the car 7 years and appart from a few new tyres and a new handbrake switch, it has been a fab reliable car. It has 85k on the clock.
The oil can lamp came on Saturday during a local trip (before knocking sound appeared) so it was topped up with oil. Sound began 2 days later and swiftly took to the garage. They have said there is a major engine issue and to get it to a hyundai dealership as it would need a specialist to strip it down, investigate and repair. It's either a cam shaft issue or a crank shaft issue they say. We were thinking of downsizing the car anyway last year, so now I don't know if it would be worth a potentially very expensive repair or try and sell it with such a huge problem? Obviously decreasing it's value massively. I have no idea how much it's worth now and don't want to just give it away. 🥺

Could you get an engine from a wreckers, and do a swap?

I think what I would do, is talk to the dealers to see if they would take it in part exchange for something out of their stock.
They are going to want to listen to the engine, and may pin down what is wrong, perhaps give you an idea as to the cost of fixing it.
You may get more than scrap value, or decide it's worth repairing, whatever you are likely to gain a bit more information to help with your final choice.

    Good Luck.

    Purely for what it's worth.
During my years working with, or for, different workshops, I never came across a reputable one who would fit a secondhand engine. Simply because they would have to guarantee it in some way.
If you fit your own engine that is a different story, but bear in mind that most dealers in secondhand engines probably have no idea of the condition of the engines they sell.

As the oil light came on there's a very high probability that the engine suffered major internal damage.
