Clutch / Gear problem 59 plate Astra active
-
Can anyone help me at all? I’m debating on what to do with my Astra (active 1.4 petrol 74000miles). The other day whilst driving my car stopped moving after trying to change gear. The clutch pedal is slack (not flat to the floor like you would expect if the clutch has gone) and you can freely move the gearstick, car starts fine just does not move at all. I’ve checked all fluid levels which are fine and I’ve tried to move the car in second, third etc to see if it would “kangaroo hop” it to move with no avail. You don’t need to put the clutch in to move the gearstick. I just wondered as I know the price of a clutch isn’t a cheap job and the car is older but I’m just wondering if anyone has had something similar and what it could be before I scrap the car! I’m useless with cars but if this is an easy cheap fix I don’t want to get rid of my car!! Can anyone help at all? Thanks in advance Laura 😊

From your post it difficult to sort out if the clutch has failed or the gear selector (in the gearbox) have failed but if the rest of the car is working OK, changing the clutch will cost less then replacing the car.
You mention topping up fluids, the clutch hydraulics my need bleeding if this has been low.
A garage or a mobile mechanic or an experienced mechanic can diagnose the problem and give you a price, to make good.
I think some Vauxhall's had trouble with the clutch plate failing to transmit the drive even though the clutch plate was not worn out.

My first though is that maybe the clutch cable inner is coming 'unraveled' and jamming, causing the clutch to be depressed all the time.
The old Bowden cables on my bikes would do this, and all it took was one strand of the cable to break and cause the whole cable to jamb up solid.
Get someone to push the clutch pedal and see if the clutch lever actually moves before you think of a complete clutch job.
