Historical MOT Mileage Discrepancy

  • mezzybear90's Avatar
I bought a car in 2023 on PCP finance and the documents matched the cars odometer reading.

I have had to change cars due to change in circumstances so I am part exchanging this vehicle in. The dealer I am part exchanging to has done checks on my car and noticed that it’s MOT history has a lower mileage in 2021 (prior to me owning the car) then it had the previous year by 6000 miles which is obviously incorrect. I assume it is just an error when submitting the MOT mileage but I was never informed about this when I first purchased the car. Surely the dealer I bought this car from should’ve noticed when they did their due diligence checks and rectified it then?

I am just wondering what I should do as I would never have bought the vehicle with a discrepancy had I been informed and it is now having an impact on me part exchanging it.

Hey @mezzybear90 , welcome to the RAC Community, and thanks for making your first post, it's great to hear from you.

Did your car come with service history too? If so, how does that align?
In the wider view, I'm not sure there's anything you can do - I'm not sure how difficult it would be to prove/disprove that all of this is the case.

I wonder if there are any thoughts from any of our regulars?
    Thanks,
    Nick

Purely a guess but I am aware of Testers putting wrong digits in or transposing digits on MOTs, even with registration numbers. They are basically mechanics not typists.

If I was buying the car I would use that as a reason for not paying the asking price.
If I am selling, then the storey is, it make no difference, it's just a typing error, which in fact is probably true.
