I remember popups being endemic around the Dotcom boom until blockers were developed, but I'm noticing a new thing nowadays in the form of "official" or "sanctioned" type popups...

Each time I visit a site it seems like I need to complete an assault course with my mouse: yes you can use cookies; no I don't want to join the mailing list; no I'm okay for a discount code; I don't want to fill out a survey ... by which time I've forgotten why I went to the site

Is there a modern version of a popup blocker? I use Adblock, social media button hiders, and those kinds of things...but nothing seems to touch these popup messages

I use Firefox for browsing. Brilliant pop-up blocker, so I often get the 'Entry to this site is dependent on accepting ads', or blurb about how I am de-funding the site by blocking ads. I look on browsing same as going into a shop to browse goods. If you want to lock the doors, that's OK, and if you don't want me looking before I buy, it's your profit loss, not mine.

Firefox has some of the best adblockers, but to block 99% of not just ads but also spyware and trackers check out the Raspberry Pi Hole.

Best part is that the software is free and open source but you do need a Raspberry Pi which is well worth the $5. 😊

I use DuckDuckGo browser it doe's quite well at blocking stuff.

I used to use Startpage but they discontinued the uBlacklist add-on so I switched to DuckDuckGo where it still works.
