Stuff you did as a new driver

Do you remember your first drive after passing your test, or something quite soon after passing?

I remember getting out of the town onto the open lanes and wanting to see what happened when I put my foot down hard ... I unleashed the full 1 litre, 100 horsepower Fiesta engine I had at my disposal ... I still think the feeling of doing that beats any hot hatch or muscle car I've driven since!

    What about you?

I took my test in my |Mother's Renault 16 complete with column gearchange.

Whilst on test she went shopping and after half an hour of waiting for her to return I went looking.

Still remember the strange feeling of being able to drive solo even though it was 48 years ago.

The main thing I remember in the early stages after passing my test was planning my routes so that I didn't have to turn right at roundabouts - it seemed like such a complicated thing and I was just putting my fate in the hands of the gods to get round safely!
For the record, 30 odd years later, I'm ok with this and at peace with roundabouts!
    Thanks,
    Nick

Not a car, but just after passing bike test.
I decided to go for a ride the night I passed. I was approaching a main road with a red light intending to turn right. Directly opposite the junction was a cafe, and I saw a parked Police car, so I was determined to do everything right. I indicated and pulled across into the right turn lane, and stopped at the line. I checked both directions, nothing coming, so I pulled away. The Police car immediately pulled out after me and stopped me a little way down. They asked me if I really thought it was a good idea to jump the lights in front of them, when I had so obviously seen them. I told them that the sight of them had put me off, and that it was their fault. They were smiling the entire time and one of them, who obviously knew bikes (I was on a 650cc BSA), asked me when I had passed my test. I told him that it had just been a few hours ago, at which point they both laughed and told me to clear off.
I have never jumped a red light since.
