I tried googling but I seem to have fooled the AI thing at the top, because it tries to explain why half pints cost a premium, which I completely understand ... I'm trying to figure out why a restaurant would make it cheaper to buy 2 halves??

I've seen it a few times recently, not enough to make it worth looking like a prat by buying 2 halves at once instead of pints, but prices like £2.50 for a half and £5.10 for a pint

Is there some new tax incentive I don't know about to incentivise pubs to serve smaller quantities and encourage responsible drinking??

It looks a bit like petrol and diesel, the retail price nearly always works out to be XXX.9 amazing isn't it!

I suppose;
1. It is a restaurant...
2. It's in the dark (why are they usually so dark?) and you are not supposed to notice.

Thinking back, I've noticed similar stuff before, like it's cheaper to order a neat spirit and a whole bottle of coke than have a tiny dash of coke put in at the bar. I guess most people aren't saddos like me who picks up on the numbers all the time 😒

When I was younger, a pint of beer, generally, was less than half the price of a gallon of petrol. We went for a meal last Wednesday, and I noticed a pint is now more than a gallon. The world we live in.

That's an interesting comparison @Rolebama as I was asking an older relative whether petrol really was cheaper in the old days, considered versus value of everything else

I did once try to work out how economical I am versus an average car after someone at an American car show said their Mustang did 1 mile to the pint ... I think I could be more economical than that but not sure I could match a typical hatchback as that'd require you to walk a good 6 miles for a pint

In 1966 a pint* was 1s 5d (7p) in all the local pubs. A gallon of petrol** was 3s 6d (17.5p). Last Wednesday, I noticed £6.40 for a pint of bitter, which seems like hen's teeth locally as we are now surrounded by wine and cocktail bars. Last night I paid £1.38.9 per litre for petrol. (£6.30 per gallon).
*This applied to light ale, brown beer and bitter beer.
** This was Regular, Premium and Super were each a few pennies more.
This equates to a price hike of 91 times for beer and 36 times for petrol. According to Microsoft Windows Calculator.

You should defiantly look into home brewing, a keg of 21 liters (about 5 US gallons) costs me around $35 (28 quid) so 70p a pint.

I wish the Americans would use metric.
US gallon = 3.785 liters
5 gallons is then 19 liters or thereabouts
So 40 US pints or 33 British pints.
I just put it in a Cornykeg, hook up the CO2 and enjoy rather than count the pints. When it's empty I just hook up another keg.

Talking to neighbour, I suggested a filling station around the corner was cheaper.
His response was he wasn't bothered for a 1p per litre.
So I say, "would you go there for 4.5p per gallon off?"
He said, "of course, I'm not stupid!"

My son-in-law mentioned that a petrol station near where he works is 4p a litre cheaper. Trouble is a 60-mile round trip would cost me around £7, so I would have to buy more than an empty tank would hold even to break even.
