Where has All the Traffic Gone?
-
I had to take my car into the 'local' BMW dealer this morning to have the airbag recall done. It is a journey I absolutely detest because of delays caused by congestion because of all the parked cars. What should be a fifteen minute trip usually takes between forty minutes and an hour, at any time, as there are supermarkets, DIY shops etc along the route as well as an over-abundance of traffic lights and roundabouts. So, being booked in for 9am, I left home at 8am. My thinking being usual traffic plus icy roads.I arrived at 8.16! Very light traffic and very few parked cars. I left to come home at 10.40. Same driving time. What happened?

I've noticed similar, I never seem to get stuck in traffic jams these days, anywhere to be honest.
When did you last do the journey? Was it years ago or recently?
Maybe the ice, or at least the thought of it, kept people at home... I wonder which is less dangerous, quiet icy roads or typical town drivers... 🤔
Sorry in advance but this reminds me of a joke I saw on Mock the Week... they were talking about "everyday prayers" so things like praying you get a seat on a busy train. Frankie Boyle (who else?) said he finds if he prays very loudly to Allah, he tends to get the whole train to himself -
I last did part of the journey when I took the wife shopping before Christmas. Roughly half way to the dealer, still took half hour each way.
The only God I pray to is the one who wears my wedding ring. She insists on it! 🙄
Loved the Frankie Boyle joke. A friend of mine went on holiday and we know him as a bit of a paranoiac, yet he seemed quite happy to go. I asked him why. His reply was that he had planted ISIS and Iranian flags in his garden, and on the front of his house. With MI5, MI6, SAS, CIA and SIS watching his house, no worries.Last edited by Rolebama; 09-01-25 at 11:50. Reason: typo

Well yes unfortunately.
It doe's appear as vehicles have got more reliable, safer, comfortable, the drivers pay less attention to driving.
At the moment the hospital transport is making more use of taxis, many are automatics and highbred.
It painfully obvious, as a passenger, the driver is not planning just reacting, and in the snow they prefer the half second rule rather than ten times the two second rule. 😲Last edited by olduser; 13-01-25 at 13:52.

The snow/ice had been fairly consistent since New Years Day - almost 2 weeks - I definitely noticed that traffic has been much lower than usual.
I jumped to the conclusion that a proportion of drivers took the opportunity to work from home, a desire that was likely heightened following the Christmas break.
