Hello

I was wondering if I could just have some advice. I’m in a pickle and think a garage is taking advantage of me and just wanted some advice before I fork out more money


In August my car broke down so I took it to a friend’s garage who changed the timing belt and a few other things. I then had to take it to a special garage as the ad blue was playing up and my friend doesn’t deal with that

So I paid this other garage to remove the add blue and re mapped it

Then my engine light came on again

I took it to my friends who said it was soot build up and the EGR but again he couldn’t do it so took it back to this other garage

He said I could either
Replace the EGR valve for £520 or remove it for £300

I decided to replace it
The day I pick it up from the garage the engine light came on again
Now he’s telling me it’s going to cost £1000!!!!!!!!! As I now need a new cooler and pipework

Ive heard that he should have cleaned it out etc when he replaced the valve
I just don’t know what to do

advice is welcomes please


My friend who I take my car to said this isn’t right and it’s to do with what he did with the ad blue re mapped plus when he changed the valve he should have flushed it out


I know this is cheeky but I just need to know if he’s taking advantage or if he’s done the right

My advice would be to discover exactly why the engine light is on, and get a list of all fault codes stored.
It is quite common when a fault occurs that other fault codes are stored. It is a matter of experience deciding which of the codes are extraneous to the original problem.* It is for this reason that I recommend taking it to an established main dealer workshop.
*Eg. Coil pack and/or injector problems can throw up catalytic converter codes, and timing out can throw up coil pack/injector/fuelling codes. These are obviously related to petrol systems, but you get the gist.
