Have you ever done something regrettable while driving?

I was waiting for a while at a busy roundabout and the driver behind me kept beeping at me, I worked out, because he was cross with me for giving way

A slow lorry was approaching the roundabout from my right so I saw my chance to go, but decided to wait a bit, until there was only time for me to go, and boy racer behind me had to wait for the lorry to go all the way round

It's not an excuse but I was already upset due to a family member in hospital and it cheered me up a bit, however childish

Has anyone else ever done something a bit naughty?

Nothing naughty about what you did, but boy racer s lucky that there was no copper about who could have booked him for unnecessary use of the horn 😉 which is a 3 point and £200 fine offence.

I think we are all guilty of being a bit "naughty" from time time to time, but it all comes down to the ongoing risk assessments we make for the whole duration of our drive.

About 4 or 5 weeks ago I was driving my bus down a road controlled by speed humps and a 20 limit.

I had a wheelchair and passenger secured in the back of the bus, and when going over speed humps in particular it is a case of 1 or 2MPH max to avoid the passenger being bounced around given that a long wheelbase exacerbates the speed humps even more and makes it very uncomfortable for the passenger.

Anyway, close to a school, its school kicking out time and the driver of a 4 series BMW decided that he was not going to wait and came past ne in excess of 40 MPH and was actually going airborne over the speed humps. At one point I thought he was going to lose control.

One good thing about my job is that all our buses carry dash cams.

So I forwarded the footage to my former colleagues and apparently the look on the drivers face when he received the knock on the door was an absolute picture 😀.

He reckoned it was a mistake/misjudgement. Unfortunately the evidence showed otherwise given the footage showed him clearly giving me the finger as he passed me.

Be interesting to see what happens in court, but that was not just naughty but decidedly dangerous and stupid.

The point I am making (badly) is that there is a fine line between making a naughty mistake such as going through on an amber light through a misjudgement or a calculated risk and making a deliberate decision which could endanger others.

My biggest deliberate sin was many years ago. I had to go from Uxbridge to West Drayton in the rush hour. (About 4 miles). The point of my journey was to save someone who was going to be sacked, because the actual culprit had been believed when he blamed the unfortunate. It was when it was snowing and congestion was worse than usual. I drove the whole way on the right-hand side of the road. There were no pedestrians, and as is the way in rush hour, hardly any oncoming traffic , but I would pull onto the footpath when oncoming traffic appeared.

While on night patrol I saw a car at our local abandoned airport runway.
The car had all the windows misted up and was gently rocking.
I aimed my spotlight at the car and put on my overhead red and white lights, then did nothing, just sat there with the car lit up and my lights going.
After about 2 minutes I turned off all my lights and left.
We all know what was happening in the car and that couple will now be racking their brains to work out what just happened and if their parents/significant other would learn of their 'escapade'
    Psychology in action 🤣

On a similar note I found a car parked up on the observation post on the M4 in the early hours of one morning..

The windows were also steamed up and the vehicle was rocking from side to side so it was pretty obvious what was happening inside.

I banged on the window and shouted "Don't you know you can only stop on the hard shoulder in an emergency?"

An out of breath voice replied "This was an emergency!"

I fell about laughing and simply said to hurry up and I would say no more about it. I didn't have the heart to book him after he had been so honest. Sure enough a couple of minutes later he did depart 🤣
