New EV Purchase Question

  • Piperdog123's Avatar
I've been thinking about buying a brand new EV and currently there are some major discounts around.

Found the car for me - MG4 Trophy long range.
    List £34k
    Discounted price £22.5k

Dealer has advised that they buy in bulk as a "fleet" purchase. I would own the car from day one but the V5C would remain in the dealer's name for 6 months after which they would transfer to my name.

The dealer is an official MG dealer.

Trying to find out if this is ok or whether there are any pitfalls. An online search hasn't cleared up the question.

Any thoughts please would be welcome.

    Thank you

I would want to check what my insurers thought of this, I would assume if they are happy I would be happy, better still if the insurers would put it in writing.

Ever the pessimist, I would be concerned about what would happen if I wrote the car off in the first 6 months, would it be insured, and who are the insurers going to pay out to, you or the dealer?

The registration document shows the Keeper, which would be you.

Seems like the dealer is up to something. As Olduser states above, you would be the keeper, and registration document should be in your name and possession.

I'd guess the dealer bought the car on very favourable terms, and the manufacturer's condition was that it be used as a demonstrator for six months.

Thank you all so far for your responses.

The dealer (main dealer) says they've bought a bucket load of vehicles under a fleet arrangement which they bought at favourable prices and are passing a large discount to the buyer. But to achieve this, the vehicle V5C needs to be registered as a fleet purchase first and for a 6 month period. I would own the car but they would have the V5C.

They say that they have sold over 60 new cars this way last month alone.

Never heard of this myself which is why I'm cautious and asking opinions here.

    Thank you

OK, so the car is already registered. To whom?

And when? Bear in mind that the warranty period will have starter on the date of first registration.

Also check that you'll have the normal warranty (and breakdown assistance if applicable), and not some watered-down 'fleet' arrangement.

The car would be registered on the day of collection.

First registration to the dealer who would keep this for 6 months before transferring to myself.

I believe full warranty but not sure about breakdown assistance cover at this point.

If it wasn't a mainstream dealer I would have run for the hills before now. But the fact it is.....

If it's anything like watches, which is may well not be, it will be because the dealer wants to make sure it's for your personal use. They don't want you to buy it super cheap, then sell it on for more-but-still-cheap
