Sold a faulty car
-
I bought a car from a sole trader. He bought the car to me. I told him I had a machanic to look over the car as i didn't want him to rip me off. The lad I used was a family friend who's in his first year at collage for motor macanics. That evening the engine management light came on. I contacted the guy and said tge cide was reading engine running lean. His reply was to put premium petrol in it which I couldn't as I'd just filled the car with petrol. On further investigation but a freind the evaporation value had duck tape round it which had a split in it sothis was replaced and we thought was the problem. A few days later tge light came on again. I booked it into a garage they done a diagnostic test and smoke test. They said the turbo pipe has a split in itso replaced that but on further investigation the turbo was broken and part of it had damaged tge catalytic converter. I've asked for a full refund on the car. The guy said I had a machanic look at the car and he said there's nothing wrong with it. I've tried explaining that he was only a first year collagestudent and wouldn't have noticed such a problem as only knows the basics. He's refusing to give me a refund and trying to blame me for the car. What are my chances in a small claims court or have I just got to admit I've been had over and lost my money. Please help

Maybe wrong but I'm quite sure having someone look over the car doesn't lessen your rights (or greaten your responsibility) in any way, whether you took someone from the F1 pit lane or your elderly grandmother, makes no difference
I'd say your chance in court depends on how traceable he is, and (regardless of whether he is or not) whether he somehow tries to argue he's a private seller and not a dealer
