My Dad's Dremel, which belonged to my Grandfather, has broken after about 50 years and we want to get him a new one for Christmas

We are stuck as to which one to go for as there seems to be several to choose from

I'm not the most practical person when it comes to DIY... could anyone offer any advice or experience?

He's more than a hobbyist, he's a "fabricator" by trade - basically a caretaker but that does a bit of everything (except gas or serious electrics!) - he calls himself a professional potterer though I think he plays his abilities down as he tends to be able to do most jobs

All I do know is his one is corded and he likes the idea of a cordless one

I have owned a few cordless ones, and although they have been good, I have been put off them because of batteries running out. The corded ones are much better, but tend to run a bit hot with extended use. FWIW: I also have an air-powered one and a compressor. No battery problems, no running hot, but I am very conscious of the noise the compressor makes.

Just to update, and thanks for the tips Rolebama. We decided to go for a cordless one in the end because he tends to only use his current one in short bursts anyway, and sometimes he finds he wants to use it when there's no mains available.

They seemed to do 3 "tiers" of cordless model in their current range. We quickly ruled out the basic one which was a very "lite" model; the middle and top-end models were almost identical, the main differences were that the top one had a digital screen and some kind of bluetooth connectivity. We decided the screen was not something you want on a device meant to last another 50 years, and the bluetooth would just wind him up, so we went for the middle model

Hopefully it's good. He dropped a hint the other day that there was a cheap Dremel on Amazon so I'm sure it will be appreciated!!

I find cordless anything is great if you use it every day but if its use is intermittent then every time you want it it needs a recharge...
