Worst experience of driving you've seen?

No matter if you’ve been driving for decades or learning now, you’ll have seen some sights on the road.

Lots of things can affect how we drive. I'm thinking about bad weather, and bad roads, but also if we're feeling tired or if we're in a hurry.

What are some of the worst examples of driving that you’ve seen?

For me it's probably when I saw two cars racing through city centre traffic. They were both jumping red lights, going on the wrong side of the road. How they didn’t lose control or cause a crash I’ll never know. 😢

They overtook me and I was behind them for a bit before they disappeared. It looked like a race but I remember that the cars were quite 'normal' in that they weren't classic boy racer style.

I live about half an hour away from a large town where that happens every day!! The town has a predominantly asian population, and I sometimes wonder if they often forget they're driving in Britain now! When I have to go there it really is like driving downtown in a busy asian city. Total disregard for most rules, the biggest car has right of way, parking on and completely blocking the pavement outside a shop, that kind of thing

Hope this is OK to say and not unreasonable or anything - I'm pretty liberal when it comes to diversity etc. but I don't think having a diverse set of attitudes to the traffic laws is overly sensible, we all need to follow the same rules really 😂

Just to add, bit off topic but interesting story relevant to my post above

I was chatting with an Indian doctor a few years ago who said when he came here to be a doctor he had to take a UK driving test. He could drive a car but decided to do a few lessons just to make sure he was up to scratch before the test

On his first lesson his instructor commented that he was indeed a good driver, with perfect car control and discipline etc., but had to ask whether it was necessary to drive with one hand permanently on the horn in anticipation of needing to beep at someone!

I guess different cultures do have different driving conditions. Many Asian cities, for instance, have massive traffic jam issues and the 'free for all' approach reinforces and 'trains' drivers into how to drive in it.
I'm quite a fast driver if I don't force myself to slow down and obey the speed limit. I'm certain this is due to a childhood where I experienced, in the back seat of course, the driving of my various uncles in France, and they all drove really, really fast! Not just from the perspective of my child eyes, but English adults thought the same. And couldn't wait to get out!

A friend of mine has a habit that when driving on a motorway and overtaking a lorry, he slows to the same speed as the lorry, and will sit there for miles alongside it. We have all spoken to him about it, and as much as he promises to be more aware, he still does it.

I was once coming down the M1 in the vicinity of Scratchwood services where the fourth lane started. It was around 3.30am and the last few miles I had been completely alone. Some distance before the fourth lane I saw three cars coming fast from behind. They were obviously racing, and as they passed two of them went for the fourth lane and one clipped the tail end of the Porsche and sent it spinning across where it hit the Aston Martin sending that spinning, but putting the Porsche back on track. The Aston swerved into the centre barrier, which straightened that up. The third car in the meantime had already hit the same barrier and for a few seconds all three of them were spinning like a choreographed dance routine. During this I had braked down to about 40 as I had envisioned a very bad end and was ready to stop. Shrieking tyres, revving engines and that horrible smell of burnt rubber abounded. As i went over the brow of the rise, I could see them next to each other across the first three lanes, driving relatively slowly with windows open, gesticulating wildly. As I caught up to them at around 30mph, I could hear them shouting and screaming at each other. The Porsche suddenly accelerated away, and the other two followed suit. Never knowingly saw them again, but later that same night, I was there again and I saw quite clearly the blue and red paints scuffed on the barrier.

Hey all, just joined, hope everyone is well.

Not long back from America where basically there appears to be no rules. We had someone drive down the hardshoulder to get onto the highway without queing. Someone pulled out to block them, not that deterred them as they pushed through the queing traffic and drove along the grass verge at the other side.

It passed a bit of time whilst we waited...

My mum always drove like this, she was not a good driver.

Of course there was the incident just a few weeks ago when a driver entered a roundabout from the wrong side of a duel carriageway, then proceeded to go the wrong way around the roundabout coming at me head-on with main beams blinding me. I swerved to avoid him, and hit the roundabout costing me £400 for a new wheel and tyre, and a new suspension bottom arm.
