I just had a look on the Ford website for something else and noticed an advert for the new Capri

It's not exactly like the old one, they decided to make something a bit different, presumably trying to fill a gap in the market with something that no one has thought to build yet ... an electric SUV

I'm not having a go at the car, which looks perfectly capable, but does anyone know why they resurrect a name that means something to people from their youth, and then use it for something completely removed from the original?

Why not just call it something new, do people really buy cars just because of the name??

I was into mechanical watches as a young adult - if a company bought out a run-of-the-mill smartwatch and called it a Rolex Submariner, it wouldn't make me any more interested

I haven't looked into the new car, but at a passing glance it bears no resemblance to the original. I do appreciate Eric Cantona in the advert though.

Why would Ford (or anyone else) want its new car to look like a 50-year old design?

Fair point, and perhaps I'm comparing apples and oranges, but The Mustang and GT40 are recognisable from their older siblings. As are the new Beetle, Fiat 500 and MINI (I'm sure there are others).

Stylistically, I'm sure Ford could've produced a model which felt more connected to the original.

I would suggest that the new Capri looks more similar to the Puma. I perfectly fine looking car, but perhaps a little forgettable.

While comparing apples to oranges, the Mustang and GT40 remain unmistakably linked to their iconic predecessors. The same can be said for the new Beetle, Fiat 500, and MINI, among others. Stylistically, I firmly believe Ford could have crafted a model that resonates more deeply with the original. In my opinion, the new Capri bears a closer resemblance to the Puma. It’s a perfectly fine-looking car, but perhaps a bit forgettable.

The original designs had a unique charm and personality that made them stand out. It’s always a challenge to balance modern updates with the nostalgic elements that fans love. Do you have a favorite classic car design?

I have to admit, I quite like the retro-design, although I doubt it'll have a 70's price tag.

I remember the R16 and R18, but not the R17. Was it available here or another N America model?

I'm fairly sure they were sold here, although it looks like I jumped the gun, the electric version is a one-off. 🙄
