Long term Car Rental

As mentioned elsewhere, our 20 year-old old Subaru Outback has become too difficult and expensive to maintain and after it failed MOT, my wife and I were obliged to SORN it when we had to rush to India to attend to a family situation. It now looks like we will be stuck here for several months and while friends have removed the battery and covered-up the car, I don't think it will be practical to spend money get it repaired judging by the garage's assessment. So, we will need a replacement car soon after returning to the UK.

The problem is that we are out of the UK for at least 3 to 4 months over winter every year, and this might extend to almost 6 months sometimes. We considered buying a new car and placing it in storage during our winter sojourn in India (as we used to do with the Subaru) but upon further consideration decided that we could save on this needless expense. Obviously, leasing a car was not an option given our plans but long term rental certainly appears to be. My initial inquiries about that resulted in positive responses from 2 companies, Apex Car Rental and SIXT; Apex in particular have understood the situation correctly and have come up with very acceptable solutions, assuming the quotes are suitable.

As we have not dealt with these companies before, I request members to comment on their status and service.

    Hi Nostromo,

Personally, I haven't used these companies or had a long term rental, but the first thing that I'd want to double check is what they consider wear and tear.

The longer you have the car dings and scratches (beyond your control) become more likely. I'd want to ensure that their policies are reasonable.

Got reposnses from both. Somewhat put off by the stuffy regimentalism of SIXT but APEX seemed genuinely good value. That said, I'll carefully check the small print.
