Odd hints and tips

I thought a thread on some hints and tips might be interesting, and hopefully other member will add to the list.
I have a 2500 gallon water tank I use for irrigation, and the outlet valve handle broke, which of course happened when it was full to the brim.
Now to siphon the contents out in a controlled manner with a regular 3/4" garden hose would work, but would take about a month, and anything larger than 1/2" or 3/4" you just don't have enough lung power to start the siphon, hence the tip.
Take your hose, in my case it was about 1 1/2" diameter, tie a nut or something heavy to a length of cord and drop it through the hose. Remove the nut and tie a piece of a rag onto the string, put the hose end with the string into whatever liquid you want to siphon and pull the string with the rag on the end through the hose, and it will act like a pump and the siphon will start.
Not sure if there's a maximum hose diameter but 1 1/2" was no problem and the tank was empty in about 3 hours..

    Nice thread idea

A cool one I saw online but have never tried

If you bodge a toilet brush into a hand drill (so that operating the drill spins the brush). Then fill a bucket with water and drop some potatoes into the bucket of water. Put the drill into the bucket and spin it for about 30 seconds. The potatoes will come out skinned

    There's an app for everything.

The last time i was hanging a picture i realised that I'd mislaid the small spirit level. I knew it'd be in the spare room or in the junk drawer, but it was quicker to download a free spirit level app then dig it out.

For some reason, it's not as satisfying to see a digitally generated bubble become level, but it'll do the job.
