I'm not the most mechanically minded person, so I'm always on the lookout for useful advice from experts.

Here at the RAC, we've shared some handy tips of what you should look out for when buying a used car - this isn't a complete list, but they're checks that most drivers should be able to complete... even me.

Pay attention to the lace you are buying from. If it looks dodgy, it probably is.

Never go alone and always be prepared to walk away. Take someone who can be objective as it's easy to skim over minor defects while a salesman distracts you. Ane be aware of your rights under the Sale of Goods act 2015 (don't pay for a warranty).

Check the MOT history online which is free, and if you are unsure then pay for a more thorough check.

Talking from over here in the US the number one priority for me would be the paperwork.
Is it their car to sell, is there a lien on it, is it a clear or a salvage title?; that sort of thing.

Always good to get expert advice! I’ve found RAC’s tips super helpful. Key checks: inspect the car's exterior for dents and rust, check tire tread and wear, ensure all lights work, and listen for unusual engine noises. Test driving is crucial too.

Ask specifically if it has been involved in an accident. If there is any hesitation in their answer - walk away. I had a friend who bought what looked like an OK car, because cosmetically the car looked fine. Around six months later rust started showing all around the inner wings and bulkhead due to the repairs being carried out with no thought as to what was happening behind the very tidily welded inner and outer wings and front subfrane.
