Could Someone Give me Advice on Insurance Claims Process?

    Hello there,

I recently experienced an incident with my vehicle and I am navigating the insurance claims process for the first time. I could really use some guidance from those who have been through a similar situation.

I have contacted my insurance provider; and they have initiated the claims process; but I find myself with several questions and uncertainties like:-

What specific documents should I prepare and submit to facilitate a smooth claims process? Are there any tips for organizing these documents effectively?

How long does the typical claims process take? What can I expect in terms of communication and updates from my insurance company during this period?

Am I free to choose any repair shop; or does my insurance policy restrict my options? What should I consider when selecting a repair shop?

Will filing a claim affect my future insurance premiums? If so, how can I minimize any potential increases?

Are there any additional steps or tips you would recommend to ensure I navigate this process as smoothly as possible?

Also, I have gone through this post: https://forum.rac.co.uk/threads/9995-How-do-Insurance-Claim-Handlers-find-mlops-at-fault which definitely helped me out a lot.

I greatly appreciate any advice or insights you can share based on your own experiences. Dealing with insurance claims can be overwhelming, and hearing from others who have gone through it would be incredibly helpful.

Thank you in advance for your help and assistance.

Rather than repeat it all, read my piece I put on here just a few weeks ago, it covers most aspects

As to how long the claims process takes, how long is a piece of string?

Much will depend on whether liability is admitted, where any contributory negligence is suggested, the value of the claim, whether there is any injury, the value of any out of pocket expenses, medication, additional travel costs or vehicle hire costs, loss of earnings and so on, the list goes on.

I have just recently finished my involvement in a personal injury case which took over 12 years to settle To be fair it was a multi million pound claim) and I have been involved in some damage only which still have not been settled after a couple of years for a number of reasons.

If liability has been admitted by the third party and there are no other factors such as injury, then start chasing and if needs be get your insurance to threaten proceedings as this often focuses the mind with the additional and substantial costs that can be incurred.

The other side of the coin is whether your case is being handled directly by your insurers, a claims management firm or a law firm? This can also have a significant bearing.

As to whether it will affect future premiums? It shouldn't do in a non fault claim, but don't hold your breath as many insurers use it as an excuse to raise your premiums as you are now considered a higher risk through no fault of your own.
