Ran a red light and feel guilty as sin

  • Debs's Avatar
I was stopped at a red light and the next set turned green, mistaking that green light for mine, I proceeded. Realising no one was following me, I panicked, realising I had just gone through a red light. I’m a new driver and now panicking I’m going to lose my licence. What is the likely outcome? 😔

People commit crimes every single day, but it's getting caught that's the thing to worry about.
Any red light cameras in the area?

@Debs Are you aware if the junction was under the surveillance of a traffic light camera.

If there was no camera (and you will have seen 2 distinctive flashes if you had) then the chances are nothing more will happen, just put it down to experience and learn from it. Any driver that says they have never made a mistake is a blatant liar.

If you were caught, it is regarded as a minor misdemeanour and usually will result in a fixed penalty of 3 points and a fine. Provided you don't get anymore than 6 points in your first 2 years of obtaining your first licence it does not become a real issue other than maybe a slight increase on your insurance policy, but most insurers will allow 3 points before penalising.

All you can do is see what comes through the post in the next 14 days (assuming you were in your own car) but as said, if there was no camera in place the chances are nothing will happen.
    (not all ATS have cameras)

And by the way, you have not committed a crime, you "May" have committed a moving traffic offence resulting in points on your licence. Big difference

@TC1474 I don’t know what these look like, they do have some small monitoring things on them, I don’t know if that’s a camera or traffic flow sensor. There were no distinctive flashes. It’s just panicked me a lot now and I’m double checking green lights are for me and also very cautious that other people aren’t making the same mistake I did. I regarded myself as a safe driver but this has panicked me a lot

@NMNeil I don’t know what a red light camera looks like, I have been past the area multiple times and I don’t any big boxes on the lights, there are however some small ones. Not sure what these are

Red light cameras are NOT mounted on the lights.

They are placed several metres before the lights, usually quite high and looking down, so as to capture photos showing both the back of your car and the lights themselves. They take two photos, to prove (1) that the car was moving and (2) that the lights were red.

    What he said ☝

Camera's placed on top of traffic lights are usually as you said traffic monitoring cameras, enforcement cameras are very obvious and you cannot mistake them if they are there.

Sounds like you have nothing to worry about.

i would say that most people have a ran a red light at one point in their lives try not to stress about it too much, you'll be fine unless you've been caught by a camera like the other comments have said, but not all lights have them

I just committed this 4 hours ago. I’m also a new driver and was confused with the lanes. First time I drove in the night to fetch my husband with my toddler in the car seat at the passenger seat front that was trying to escape. Stressed already with that. Then there was roadworks which confused me more. It was my first time to use that road and was trying to get out of the 3rd exit of the roundabout around 500 meters ahead or less. Thought I was really on the right lane and followed the green because I am going ahead but realised I was on the lane for right (the road marking were faded). Just realised it was red when I passed by the light and saw the lane I was continuing which was straight ahead have a faded arrow facing me. I was doing like a counter flow! really weird. So my direction became one lane and the opposite became two lanes after the traffic light. Felt like my soul left me/depressed etc! It is 2.36am and I can’t sleep because of this. I told my husband I will never go to Newmarket again as I am not yet familiar with the place. The junction I had problem with is from Fordham Road with going to Waitrose corner (but I am going to the Roundabout for the high street). I pray there are no Red cameras.
