I am not sure about the validity of the story, as it feels that there could be a breach of data protection laws, but I am perfectly convinced that it is possible.
Back in the 90s, it would have been possible to detect some problems which could cause a car to breakdown. The manufacturer could then notify a breakdown service and have them rendezvous with the car after phoning the owner. GPS would have been involved as well.
The scheme never took off because noone was really sure how data protection and rights of privacy fitted in.

As a driving enthusiast who leans more toward the side of “advanced driving / watching ex traffic cops / has a book or 2 on roadcraft” as opposed to “likes driving through town centre at 50mph in a modded car” I feel I am a victim of statistics and the legal discrimination employed by insurance companies (I.e. most people of your car type and your age/gender/job are risky drivers so you must be too)

So based on that I’m all for proving myself as a more respectable driver than the stats for people of my demographic suggest I “should” be

That’s assuming they cut prices or offer a refund upon receiving evidence of driving that would suggest a lower insurance risk … I wouldn’t be surprised to see them simply raise prices for “bad” driving but just leave “good” drivers paying the same…

I have been offered black boxes by my insurers. They have offered to reduce my £300 premiums by £20 if I take one on. However, it will cost me an undisclosed* sum to have it fitted.
* Apparently they cannot quote until a 'technician' has seen the car as obviously they do not have this information!?
