My parents just received a letter offering a possibility of a refund for a service plan they took out in 2016 and no longer pay into, for a car they no longer own

It says they didn't have any expensive services done under the plan so may be entitled to a refund

It's from a proper insurance company so I am guessing they underwrote the manufacturer's service plan or something

They seem to have got the reg number and the purchase date correct but I don't know if that can easily be obtained by anyone

Should we ignore or engage with them?

I would look the insurance company's number up (not use one from the letter) and ask them.

An insurance company out of the blue offers to give you money.
The hairs on the back of my neck are beginning to wake up.

Rang up and it turns out my parents sold their car, x years and 9 months into ownership. The plan either didn't transfer or the new owners didn't continue it, and the car didn't have a service in those 9 months, so my parents were due 9 monthly payments back

Just under 300 quid 😊
