Age and car ownership...

  • Drivingforfun's Avatar
Yep, another stupid thread by me, just wanting to hear peoples opinions...

Do you consider any age "too old" to own any given car?

Or can you own what you want, when you want?

I am 30 and have a hot hatch. Am I too old?

I noticed a group of teenagers admiring my car the other day and thought I just couldn't interact with that crowd without looking like a weirdo...

In my opinion, though, a 20 year old generally cannot afford a nice hot hatch. Surely 30 up to about 55 (before insurance starts to get expensive again) is the sweet spot within which to drive what you want?

On the opposite side, can you be "too young" for your car?

I remember looking at V6 Jag saloons when I started driving, because they had cheap insurance for their performance figures, but decided against one in the end and went with a Mini...

    Interested to hear peoples thoughts.

I have had a number of cars over the years, and I have always had what suited my wants at the time. The only rule I stick to is not to have a loud exhaust because I tend to leave very early in the morning and return very late when visiting friends and family.

Oh.... to be 30 again! IMHO you're not too old for a hot hatch. 30 is young. But it's likely that teenagers will look at you and think you're ancient, so best move is to avoid. In fact, I'd say generally avoiding teenagers in all circumstances is wise 🤣

I'd say drive whatever you want. Mostly it's about how we drive. I've seen 'boy racers' whizzing about in a Corsa like they're Lewis Hamilton, and equally older people in the same car pootling about at the correct speed limit.

I asked tour original question to some of my friends and relatives. The only sensible conclusion was not to buy a hot hatch (sorry guys), on the grounds that they tend to be boy racer magnets and a few horror stories of near-misses with them.
Personally, I think this could be because we live in the suburbs of NW London.

My hatch isn't really what you'd call 'hot' 🤣 I'd describe it as... tepid.
