London's Ulez-scrapped cars cannot go to Ukraine, Sadiq Khan says

Vehicles eligible for scrappage as part of London's Ulez scheme cannot legally be sent to Ukraine, the mayor's office has said.

The Telegraph reported that Kyiv's mayor Vitali Klitschko had written to his London counterpart to suggest the idea as part of the scrappage scheme.

However, Sadiq Khan's office said the Labour mayor was legally unable to alter it to allow vehicle exports.

Susan Hall, the Tory mayoral candidate, said the response was "absurd".

I don't get this. Someone is saying that we get these cars off the road here because they pollute, and someone else is saying they can be sent overseas to pollute somewhere else? Or does this mean that they do not, in fact pollute, and it's perfectly OK to send them overseas? In which case they do not pollute here. Political double-speak at its best.

The point of the ULEZ is to improve local air quality, not to reduce global pollution.

I'd imagine local air quality is pretty low on the Ukrainians' priority list at the moment.

So the Ukraine is thrusting out the begging bowl again, this time asking for free cars along with the billions of dollars and weapons they want from the EU and US.
Someone somewhere stood to make money on the deal.

It is my honest belief that the reason Ukraine is getting the support is because The West, generally, wants to find out the capability of the Russian war machine. I would like to believe that they are acting because Russia is seen as a bully, and they are helping to defend the underdog.
As to the cars, it is, at the moment, believed that when Russian troops attack a civilian car, used by the Ukrainian Army, their first target is the driver. As Ukrainian cars are more commonly left hand drive, it gives the driver of a right hand drive car a few more precious seconds to take cover.

@Rolebama So if they don't send the cars it'll make the civilians safer by not making them a target?
But even those cars that are donated have to have money spent on them.
So donate a car to the Ukraine and while in the Ukraine someone will charge around $2000 to paint and repair the car, not do the work for free to benefit their own soldiers, but charge for it.
    Something very wrong here.
