Police clampdown on uninsured drivers begins THIS WEEK as new data reveals 117,000 motorists were convicted for having no cover in 2022

So reads the heading on msn.com story today.
In this day-and-age why does this still fall under the purview of the Police? With the databases held on insurance, MOTs and Tax computers, why can't they be inter-linked and a system set up in the same way as TV Licences?
Also, why advertise? If I was an uninsured driver, I would use public transport for the next fortnight, in the same way some people only slow down for speed cameras. Our whole system is a joke!

Could they make it so every speed camera reads a number plate, whether you are speeding or not, and check it against the DVLA records for tax/insurance?

I am aware this may well be easier said than done!!

I suppose it would work in a country like the US where you insure the car and anyone can drive it
