Having a car is really convenient. Gives you a sense of freedom. And comes with few responsibilities, especially car maintenance and service.

These services are so expensive and also time-consuming that is when I have decided to do it by myself, of course with a little help. But don't know where and how to start.

Are there any basic car tasks that I can perform myself instead of giving to a professional for maintenance and services?

Someone with no mechanical experience should limit themselves to basic checks. This page from the RAC website gives a lot of detail, but checking things like lights and tyres is at the top of the list.

A good tip for checking rear lights and brake lights is to look at reflections when you are stationary.

Yes, you need to be checking lights, tyres and fluid levels about weekly.

s for anything more ambitious, you might find a basic maintenance course locally. Try any nearby colleges.

Probably no help but I find it runs in the family because if your parents had all the tools, space and knowledge they tend to be able to pass it down.

If you start with nothing you tend to struggle, unless of course, like with anything in life, you are incredibly aspirational.

I'm not an idiot (most will probably disagree) but I struggle with anything more than basic checks.

But I know people who have all the gear, space and knowledge and they have their children of 10 doing basic mechanics - oil changes, wheels off, brakes etc.

Simple basic checks: Levels, (oil, water, brake fluid tyre pressures and windscreen washr fluid), Rubbers, (wiper blade condition, tyre tread depth and condition of tyres). Electrics, (all lights, horn and wipers front and rear).
