Engine makes drilling noise even though switched off and parked
-
Hi, I really need help to find out what is wrong with my car. It's making a LOUD drilling rattling noise and it's not even in use. The engine is off and has been for a day and a half but suddenly the engine started making this frightening noise and I'm scared it might explode. It carries on for a couple of hours and then stops for a while and starts again. Seems to be coming from passenger side under the bonnet. I am terrified this is dangerous. Any help gratefully received.

Best AnswerIt could be the gears stripped in the throttle body making a noise as it tries to reset itself. I had that problem on a Freelander I owned once. It was quite a common problem. Is it making a noise like this? Noise starts around the 56 second mark.

I am no mechanic, but that kind of noise could indicate a serious problem with the engine. It may just be the exhaust though, so you should get a mechanic to check it out.
Call the RAC? -
Thank you Santa. The RAC did visit and said they didn't know what it was and to go to a mechanic at a garage. I thought the RAC sent mechanics (?). He took car for a test drive and said nothing wrong. However there clearly is something wrong as no car should make that noise when it's not in use. It wakes the neighbours at night!
