Speed. range and power

I have checked with the range calculator for the Vauxhall Corsa and
the range is said to be 245miles at 30mph, 206miles at 50mph and 138
miles at 70mph. It seems to me that the extra 68miles or about 50% achieved by reducing the speed limit from 70mph to 50mph would make a significant
difference to both the need for charging and the energy consumed. This could be even more important with the electrification of heating. It is true that not all cars are driven at 70mph but many are driven at 80mph when the mileage is even worse. Incidentally a 50mph speed limit also increases the efficiency and reduces the emissions from ICEs

Remember that all this is theoretical and will rarely be reflected in actual use. Many things affect MPG or range, not least, the driver's right foot.

According to 'tests' by VOSA, my car does 57mpg. Which would be nice if I could drive everywhere on only two wheels with no air resistance. The VOSA tests are useless and can't even be relied on to compare cars. It would be interesting to find out how the figures quoted for EVs compared to the real world. Autocar showed that petrol equivalents could run rings around EV equivalents in terms of costs of petrol vs electric, and that was before the ridiculous recent price hikes for electricity and reduction in price for petrol.

Do you mean VCA (Vehicle Certification Agency)?

I don't think VOSA did any such tests, even before they were abolished a decade ago.

Beelzebub: To be honest, this isn't the first time I've used the wrong acronym . Sometimes I catch them on proof-reading, sometimes I don't. C'est la vie.
