In a spectacular piece of timing, the RAC phone app (called MyRAC in the app stores) is being updated to include a fuel price checker.

It was just yesterday that the Government announced it was forcing fuel retailers to reveal their costs of fuel amid accusations drivers are being treated as 'cash cows'.

The RAC has started updating its app for both iPhone and Android to include a fuel price checker. This is available to everyone who uses the app, not just RAC customers. Everyone gets up to 5 searches a day!

I just updated mine and tested it for fuel prices in Bristol.

This big app update as just gone out as a press release today.

It include some RAC analysis of possible savings.

The analysis found that by using the app a litre of diesel could be bought for 6p cheaper than the local average price, while petrol could be found at 5p less.

This means diesel drivers who fill up once a week could save up to £172 a year by using myRAC while those with petrol cars could benefit to the tune of £143. Those who only head to the pumps every fortnight could save £86 a year on diesel and £71.50 on petrol.
