Bot posters?

  • Drivingforfun's Avatar
Not naming any names as I don’t know for sure but I have seen a few new posters making responses to threads that seem copied and pasted from either an AI bot or from previous threads.

I am wondering whether they are asking the OP’s question to an AI bot and then posting the response, or perhaps posting a response from this very forum but from years ago, in order to build their post count.

I wonder what their motive is, I suspect maybe to create as legitimate looking account to then post spam? I don’t see any other reason?

This has been going on on other forums I am on as well.

Notably, some of the user names I see doing this on other forums are exactly the same as usernames on this forum, yet the forums are completely unrelated so they are not targeting car forums.

    Has anyone else noticed this?

    Thanks.

Yep, I've noticed this too @Drivingforfun

This is my take on it. I also don't see any other reason.

Of course I'm keeping a close eye on these. I've already sent a few DMs to some, simply to ask where are they getting their info from, as their posts look v formal and overly wordy.
I don't accuse, I just ask for some clarification.

None of those I've contacted so far have replied. And they also go v quiet, ie not posting anymore. Which means my suspicions were correct and they are indeed a spammer who realise they've been found out. Or... they're offended that I accused their posts of being too formal and bot-like!

I didn't know about the usernames being the same as on other forums. But I assume that the posts are different?

Glad you've noticed it too, Marc.

Yes I've noticed a member joining a health forum I'm on which has nothing to do with cars, & another car-based forum, at around the same time as they joined this one, under the same username as they've used on here. No they are not posting the same posts but similar writing style if that makes sense.

Just to add - I just googled their username and they seem to have made profiles on quite a few sites under the same name - all in the last 2 months or so.

Of course it could be completely innocent, like someone new to the internet and registering for all the sites they are interested in, just found it odd.

Yep, that's what I'm seeing and thinking too.
It could be innocent.... so I don't want to charge in whenever there's a newbie. Maybe I'm being gullible but I'd like to think some of them are just testing the water, new to forums etc.

But thanks for flagging this @Drivingforfun it's useful. And by all means alert me, if ever you want to, to anything that seems to have slipped through the filter!
