Is there a portable fast charger to plug into an EV when you can't make it home?
-
Imagine yourself in the middle of nowhere Maine....your mileage is ok but kind of low and not quite enough to make it home or to a charger. There must be something out there that is an affordable option for some sort of portable fast charge battery pack or something? Anyone else have similar issues // found a decent solution?

Good question @RajeevElzrando
Like a fast charger for a phone you mean? I'm sure such things exist but I'm not sure how portable it would be.
I mean, wouldn't it be the same as effectively having another fixed battery in the EV? If it's something that can be easily carried about, I guess it would be so small that the range of extra power it'd give you would be pretty low?Welcome to the RAC Community! Start here 😀

What should you do after a collision? 🤔

Simply not practical with most current cars, where serious dismantling is needed to access the battery. Not to mention that they all tend to be different sizes and shapes, so any service would need to hold a huge range of batteries at vast cost. -
@RajeevElzrando I assume that the RAC/AA/AAA will carry some means of getting some charge into a car battery as a matter of course, along with a range of adaptors to connect it.
Apart from that, anyone using an EV will be used to having to plan their occasional long-distance trips to account for the availability of charging stations. EVs are targeted at short/medium-distance commuters.Last edited by Santa; 08-07-23 at 09:26.

Delivering a useful quantity of energy to a high-voltage traction battery is a different kettle of piranhas. -
@Beelzebub I am well aware that we are discussing traction batteries.
There are 2000W portable generators that, together with a suitable inverter could put a charge into a traction battery. Of course, there is also the simple alternative of a tow or trailer to a suitable fixed charging point.
Whatever the solution, it would clearly pay to subscribe to roadside recovery.
