Electric Vehicle Tyres

  • Allegheny's Avatar
I have been reading that higher grade tyres are available for electric vehicles.
I'm curious to know whether it would be acceptable to fit these on a conventional petrol or diesel car. Apart from them obviously being more expensive, what would the advantages and disadvantages be?
I'm old enough to remember crossply tyres in general use, and there were rules regarding mixing crossplies and radials on the same vehicles. Are similar rules likely to apply regarding mixing EV and conventional tyres?

    Hey @Allegheny
Not sure if you're still researching this, but I just spotted an article on RAC Drive about EV-specific tyres.
    Any use to you?

    Thanks @Marc
Your research looks similar to mine, longer life, better grip, better fuel consumption and less noise all look good. More weight might have an effect on ride quality, but I don't know.

    No probs @Allegheny
Maybe the answer is to go fully EV? 😉 Get the tyres thrown in

I've been driving an EV for nearly 3 years, i slap on regular tires on it and my range stayed roughly the same and my car didn't catch on fire. All this special EV tires talk and special way to charge your car from 3.75% to 80.32% twice on sunday and alternate when the blood moon comes out is scaring potential EV buyers.

Fair point! I suppose it's quite a change for some first-time new EV drivers. Some are bound to worry a bit. Did you have any doubts when you first switched to an EV three years ago?

Hi! While there are tires marketed as "electric vehicle" tires, they are not exclusive to electric vehicles and can be used on conventional petrol or diesel cars as well. These tires typically have low rolling resistance, which can help improve the range of an electric vehicle, but can also provide fuel efficiency benefits for conventional vehicles.
One potential disadvantage of using higher grade tires designed for electric vehicles on a conventional car is that they may be more expensive than traditional tires. Additionally, they may have a different tread pattern or rubber compound that is optimized for electric vehicle performance, which may not necessarily translate to improved performance or handling on a conventional car.
As for mixing EV and conventional tires, there are no specific rules or regulations regarding this, but it is generally not recommended. Mixing different types of tires can lead to uneven wear, poor handling, and reduced performance. It is generally recommended to replace all four tires at once to ensure consistent performance and handling.

hello, i am driving a tesla model 3 18models, and its been years since i have changed my tires. so i was wondering if i should go with regular michelin and pirelli tires or should i switch to new EV tires. I feel like that EV tires might be a better choice for electric vehicles. any thoughts on that if any of you have experience ?

I still have doubts about range. I like to go hiking out in the wilds at weekends, where there are no charging points!
I can fill my car with Diesel and it will do over 600 miles - not that I've ever done that though.
